Abstract

In the developing world, the existence of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) is considered very important as they have strategic roles to play, especially with respect to employment creation, poverty reduction, the growth of gross domestic product (GDP), improvement in income distribution, and women empowerment. This research paper is a comparative study on the development of MSMEs in Indonesia and Kenya. Based on secondary data and key literature on MSMEs in both countries, the study focuses on their recent development and economic performance and their main constraints. In addition, this study also covers some other important issues related to the development of these enterprises such as women entrepreneurs and utilization of internet by MSMEs in Indonesia, and motivation to start an enterprise and sources of opportunities for the development of MSMEs in Kenya.
